Glacier National Park, Montana

Glacier National Parks is one of the most spectacular National Parks in the USA . Nicknamed “The Crown of the Continent, this park offers views of glaciers, beautiful turquoise blue lakes, jagged mountains and plenty of outdoor activities. It is difficult to capture its incredible splendor with a camera. You have to see for yourself!

The park is open year round, but the best time to visit the park is a very short window of time in late spring and summer. The park boasts an incredible scenic drive (“Going to the Sun Road”) which was still partially snow-covered when we visited in late June.

As the park was visited by nearly 3 million visitors in recent years, the National Park Service has instituted a Visitor Use Management Strategy to handle the volume of crowds. For peak visitor months, you must register for a vehicle pass (which is a complex process - see our suggestions below in the ‘Notes’ Section.

Biking:

Bicycles are permitted on all paved and unpaved roads in the park. There are also four multi-use trails on which bicycling is allowed, but they are situated in the lower elevations. They were flat and beautiful of course, but the view of the mountains was limited.

Cycling is allowed on the Going-To-The-Sun-Road, but the volume of traffic and lack of shoulder makes cycling prohibitive. Lucky for us, the most beautiful portion of the GTTSR (past Avalance Creek) was closed to car traffic due to snow removal. We were very fortunate to ride at our leisure. With our e-bikes, climbing the elevation was a breeze...

Notes:

Visit the NP Website for information on securing a vehicle registration: Glacier NP Vehicle Registration

  • Due to the popularity and short window of optimal weather conditions, plan your trip at least one year in advance. Chances are the RV parks may be already booked for the coming year.
  • You will need a vehicle registration pass during the most heavily visited months (May through September) in addition to a National Park entrace pass to enter the park.
  • Little known fact: During the crowded months when a vehicle registration is required, you CAN enter the park without a vehicle registration at certain times. The park is open 24/7, you may enter before 6 am or after 3 pm, when there is no ranger stationed at the gate.

Our Rating:

10 on the “We’re going to miss this place” scale. One of the most beautiful places in the USA.

Glacier Meadow RV Park and Campground

Open June 1 through late September, this beautiful, spacious campground is located 16 miles west of East Glacier Park on US Highway 2 at the southern tip of Glacier National Park. It is convenient to entrances of the National Park: an approximate 30 minute drive to Apgar Village (West Park Entrance) and a 30 minute drve to the Two Medicine Entrance; about 45 minutes to St. Mary’s.
