Great Sand Dunes National Park

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Great Sand Dunes National Park is located in Southern Colorado - the park is open 24/7, year round. The day we visited the park it was drizzling, but it was the only day we could visit. Joe and Emma were with us. It was incredibly beautiful because the rain had colored the sand in ways we would not have seen on a sunny day (see above).

They allow visitors to hike AND they allow sand-sledding and snowboarding on the dunes!

In addition, there are multiple campground sites to choose from. Definitely and must-see! See more photographs of Great Sand Dunes National Park

Biking:

We did not see a paved bike path, but their website states that they allow off road tires; refer to the NP website for more information.

Don’t Miss:

  • The Visitor Center - great graphic on how the dunes have not changed in the last 138 years!
  • Nature Trails near the park

Notes:

1. During the spring/summer, there is a creek that forms at the foot of the Sand Dunes, so it is like going to the beach!

2. We understand that stargazing is excellent here - would love to come back and photograph the Milky Way.

Our Rating:

8 on the “We’re going to miss this place” scale. We weren't able to sled or board because of the rain. That looks like fun...

RV Park:

Alamosa KOA Journey

Review: Beautiful site with amazing views the mountains that surround the area. Friendly, helpful staff. Nice amenities and close to the town of Alamosa, with a wide selection of good restaurants.
